Veteran Called

John Brant, SR Died Monday Evening of Heart Trouble - Was Auctioneer and Soldier of Civil War

The death reaper laid low the veteran John Brant, Sr. on Monday evening, June 26, 1905 about 5:30 o'clock. He had been ill with heart trouble for some time, the disease assuming an acute form in the last few weeks. He was the second veteran to die within a few days, JB Heffelman being the other. Deceased was a resident of Orrville since 1867 and is survived by five children, Mrs. John Eggleston, Sr, Philip, Charles, John of Orrville, and Mrs Wm Messenger of Brink Haven. His wife died in 1897.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at his late residence on North Walnut street. The funer sermon was preached by Rev L Twinem of Presbyterian church. The burial obsequies were in charge of Wayne Post 296 GAR. Internment was in Crown Hill cemetery.

John Brant, Sr. was a native of this county, having been born in Honeytown in 1832and at his death was aged 73 years, 1 month and 4 days. Early in his life he move with his parents to near Liberty, Knox county, where in 1854 he married Sarah Lope. During the war they moved with their family to near Orrville, residing west of Carr's schoolhouse on the Ohio Jones farm. Mr Brant in the Civil war served his country, being a member of Co. F 176th OVI.

Since 1867 deceased and lived in Orriville where he became well known de followed auctioneering as a livelihood. In politics he was a stern Democrat. The village elected him marshal for several terms in which capacity his service was efficient. The office of the county coroner was also filled by him. In his death, Orrville loses on of her oldest citizen's and Wayne county a pioneer.
