Note: HURON - Charles H. Washburn, 93, Huron Township, longtime farmer, passed on October 19, 2011. He was surrounded by his four sons and family following his brief illness. He was born April 2, 1918 on the family farmstead in Huron Township. He graduated in 1938 from Huron High School where he excelled in track & basketball. On June 13, 1942 he married Merriam B. Wolcott at First Presbyterian Church in Sandusky, Ohio. Charles lived a full and healthy life on the homestead where he owned and operated the family dairy farm with his sons, providing milk locally to Wechters Dairy. In addition to the farm, he worked as Superintendent of Erie County State highways, retiring in 1983 . He enjoyed hunting, sports, and was an avid card player. He was a member of Huron Township Zoning Board, a 56 year member of Marks Lodge 359 F & AM, where he attained his 32nd degree; Singara Grotto, and the Huron Township Conservation Club. In 1965 he was recognized by the State of Ohio with the Wildlife Conservation Award for his conservation efforts. He often gathered family and friends together to play cards, especially Pinochle. He was a current member of card groups playing at Riley Country Club and Clyde Eagles. He played only days before his death and was sharp as a tack, knowing all the cards that were played. He was a member of Huron Township Zoning Board, a 56 year member of Marks Lodge 359 F & AM, where he attained his 32nd degree; Singara Grotto, and the Huron Township Conservation Club. In 1965 he was recognized by the State of Ohio with the Wildlife Conservation Award for his conservation efforts. He often gathered family and friends together to play cards, especially Pinochle. He was a current member of card groups playing at Riley Country Club and Clyde Eagles. He played only days before his death and was sharp as a tack, knowing all the cards that were played. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Edith (Montague), brothers, Richard (Red) and Ralph. Survivors include his wife of 69 years Merriam; sister, Ruth (Richard) Warner of Longview TX, sister-in-law Nancy Washburn of Horab, WI.; sons Rolland (Pat) of Weatogue CT, Keith (Terri), Karl (Kristi), and David (June), all of Huron; 9 grandchildren, Brian (Jodi), Andrew (Michele), Julie, Philip, Kellie, Kayla (Jim West), Jessica, Samantha, and Benjamin; and great grandchildren, Madison and Morgan. Friends may call at Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Foster Funeral Home, 410 Main Street, Huron where Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. A celebration of life will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday by The Rev. Eugene Smercina at the funeral home. Burial will be at Meadow Green Memorial Park, Huron. Memorial contributions can be made to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky 44870, or Helping Hands Food Pantry, 820 Cleveland Rd E, Huron.
