I have, over time, conversed with several descendents of Alexander Clemons. In those discussions, there is one common theme, our relationship with Samuel L. Clemens, AKA "Mark Twain".
It took me a while, but I finally found the connection I was (wasn't) looking for.
For starters, I will say, there is NO relationship between the descendents of Alexander Clemons and Mark Twain. I say this with certainty.
Alexander wrote a fairly detailed history of the Clemons family, these accounts were published in the book "Pioneer Recollections of the Early 30's and 40's in Sandusky County, Ohio" by James Mitchell Bowland. In Alexander's words, "...two little boys, Isaac and and Jacob Clemons, were stolen and placed onboard a Britsh Man-O-War and brought to this country.... (Isaac) had two son's, Edward and John and Edward became the father of four sons, Jock, Samuel, Jabez, and Frank.... David, a son of Jabez, is, I believe, the father of Samuel L. Clemons better known by the nom de'plume Mark Twain"
This account by Alexander is the source of the "rumor" of his descendents being related to Mark Twain. However, it is well documented that Samuel Clemons' fathers name was not David. His parent's names were John Marshall Clemons and Jane Lampton. Further more, his grandfather's name was Samuel Clemons, not Jabez.
